Kane arrested for cab driver run-in
Fighting over money is common -- but does $0.20 even count as money?
Two dimes (or four nickels) was allegedly the cause of a fight between NHL star Patrick Kane and a cab driver in Buffalo, NY. According to the Buffalo News, Kane (along with his cousin) were arrested after they allegedly roughed up a cab driver who couldn't give them the required change.
I think that's the first time I've been to the TMZ website.
Well, this Kane story isn't likely to go away any time soon, as we're in the dog days and when something happens — remember Stefan Legein's "retirement?" — it'll get more than its fair share of play. I'm not sure what else there is to be said, other than I'm surprised it's him, but I'll let you guys take it away in the comments.
Over on the Calgary Puck boards, they're already calling him "20 Cent."

Innocent until proven guilty, of course, but damn this is more bad news the Hawks did not need. What an awful off-season for them.

During my days as a waiter I discovered the richest people are usually the cheapest.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if alcohol were a factor also.

I know he’s underage, but that almost seems to go without saying.

for those not familiar with buffalo “getting a ride from Chippewa Street” pretty much makes the assumption that they are drunk…

Not to mention that there’s more underagers on Chippewa than people who are of age…..

Oh, no kidding. Stories like this I always check at the end for the nearly inevitable “participants had been drinking” or “alcohol is believed to be a factor.”
I wonder if the richer people are more likely to be cheapskates because they don’t recall what it is like to have a job like that themselves, and how important tips are. If you have more empathy with a waiter or maid or someone like that, you might be more likely to tip generously because you remember how much you appreciated generous tips.

“20 Cent”…awesome. Great nicknames are sorely lacking in hockey these days.

Being a cab driver is dangerous enough without douchebag rich kids punching you in the head over chump change. What a dick if this story is accurate.

Next year?
Our cap troubles may just have become one-third less troublesome. If you’re stupid off the ice, eventually you’re stupid on the ice; a player’s brains always ultimately affects what the hands can do.

According to the cabbie, Kane pulled out the classic “Don’t you know who I am?” line:

They should suspend him.....
to the harshest punishment possible. The NHL needs to set the ground for what is acceptable and unacceptable. The NHL needs to take a page from Roger Goodell and law down the law.

I’m beginning to think that may be what happens here. We still need more details, and he is innocent until proven guilty. The cab driver interview is disturbing, however.

If you do that here, then you really have to give Burrows a similar suspension.
On the bright side, no NHL player has shot himself with his unlicensed gun in a busy club yet.

That’s fine and dandy, but what’s the “harshest punishment possible”?
I didn’t see anything in the CBA about this except for merely the commish can punish players for off-ice behaviour (see the Mark Bell situation).

Too much fame combined with not enough maturity. Who’s really surprised? Twenty years old is still a pretty stupid time for normal folks. He took it to a new (low) level. (ya I know – innocent until ….etc.).
His punishment will likely be in the form of lost sponsorships as it should be. He is the wrong role model now.

Wow, talk about a WTF moment.
He goes from a likeable kid from a solid family with ridiculous hockey skills, to (allegedly of course) an underage-drinking idiot with self-entitlement and violence issues.
The capacity of human stupidity never fails to amaze me.

Not to defend what he did in any way,
because he still needs to take the heat for it, but I’m not sure that the two are mutually exclusive.
A week or two in jail, come community service and some heavy fines (funding and helping coach a league for underprivileged kids for a season springs to mind) may be appropriate to remind him, but I dare say most of us did dumb stuff when we were that age. He just needs a cuff to the back of the head to clear his thinking.

Kane has “handlers” and others who advise him. He makes more money than most people at any age from playing a game…. I didn’t do this kind of dumb stuff when I was his age so don’t pass this off as boys will be boys… It’s what you do when you think people aren’t watching that reveals your character, your integrity.

I was reading on Inside College Hockey (or maybe it was listening to their podcast, can’t remember) and one of their writers, James V. Dowd, was saying that Kane had been getting a big head or an inflated sense of worth over the past year. I didn’t really believe it cause of all the great stuff that was posted everywhere about he and Toews being such good guys, but I guess it was at least partially true.

Look at it this way
He’s ready for the Olympics in Vancouver now. Team USA 1998 approves of his cabbie-handling ways although they’re disappointed he wasn’t able to make this situation unfold in an olympic village or hotel.

Patrick Kane has yet to receive the fax of such heady advice.
