2009-10 NHL Season Preview: Buffalo Sabres
Who's in: Jeff Cowan, Mike Grier, Cody McCormick, Steve Montador
Who's out: Maxim Afinogenov, Dominic Moore, Teppo Numminen, Andrew Peters, Jaroslav Spacek, Mikael Tellqvist
Outlook: It was another fairly quiet off-season for the Sabres, who only added depth defenceman Steve Montador and checking winger Mike Grier via free agency and watched as Jaroslav Spacek, Maxim Afinogenov and Teppo Numminen all flew the coop for various reasons.
Long-time GM Darcy Regier will be hoping mostly for growth from within, and he should get some help from young reinforcements like giant defenceman Tyler Myers and pint-sized sniper Nathan Gerbe. Both will contend for full-time roles as rookies in a group that's already relatively young, especially a back end that will rely on Andrej Sekera and Chris Butler to pick up a lot of Spacek and Numminen's minutes.
What coach Lindy Ruff needs more than anything from this group is a return to form from his big guns and more scoring support from the likes of Drew Stafford, Clarke MacArthur and Jochen Hecht, all of whom should be able to threaten the 25-goal mark with enough playing time. If Derek Roy, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville can return to a close to point a game clip and Tim Connolly plays 60-plus games, Buffalo will easily be a playoff team (and a high-scoring one at that).
Working in the Sabres' favour is the fact that the Northeast Division remains in flux, with all three of the Eastern Conference Canadian clubs in various stages of rebuilding (or "retooling"). Challenging Boston is probably not going to be on the agenda, but Buffalo could surprise with some help from their unheralded young talent.
And, as always, a healthy Ryan Miller is key.
X-factor: Tyler Myers

Nutshell...
…the Sabres were 3-6-3 when Vanek and Miller were both out last year. Obviously that bad spell cost the Sabres a playoff spot when they finished 2 points out of a playoff birth. In that way, it reminds me of the Pens being as low as 10th in December while dealing with Gonchar’s injury. But the Pens were able to put it together…the Sabres margin for error is a bit slimmer (not picking 1st four drafts in a row will do that to a franchise).
Anyhoo, I think there is reason for guarded optimism this year in Buffalo. James’ point about Miller’s health is spot on – Ryan Miller has developed into a Top 5 Eastern Conference talent and the Sabres locking him up for the next 5 years clearly gets them his best years.
Secondary to that is the bounceback years expected from Pominville and Hecht. Here’s to hoping that they will move back up to their career means of 80 and 55 points/year resepectively.
The defense presents the question marks, but with Rivet/Montador/Lydman/Tallinder/Sekera/Butler, you have some wisdom to go along with those young starters. In addition, you have to think Darcy Regier has some chips at the table at the trading deadline this year with both Lydman and Tallinder in the final years of their contracts. If we’ve learned anything in Buffalo…it’s value at the deadline. How Tyler Myers fits in is obviously a big question. I see him starting up in Portland this year…but who knows how he’ll play? We shall see.
A better x-factor would be Pominville (will you get 50 points or 85 from the $5M/man) or Sekera (will he show grit or turnover the puck at the most inopportune times?). But Myers is defensible at least. A fast start may be in order for Buffalo – we started 4-0 last year before a November swoon slowed us down a bit. This year we open with 5 of 6 at home.

I don’t think Myers can go to Portland…maybe they could send him there after he plays 10 games here with the big club but it’s either here or juniors…

I am of the opinion that Miller is a top-5 NHL talent when healthy and not playing 10356735674 games in a season. I’d put Luongo, Lunqvist and Brodeur ahead of him and it starts getting tough to make a numbers or reputation argument over the last few years for any other goalie.
That said, keeping him healthy and his game count down is a big, huge, if.

Also funny...
…in that photo, why is the Caps fan in the Ovechkin jersey cheering the Sabres game winning OT goal? That’s not the first time I have seen Caps’ fans with team identity issues, especially when Buffalo comes to town. (See the nhl.com video of the same goal…Pominville’s OT winner to give Buffalo the 5-4 win on April 3rd, 2009) and you’ll see the same sort of thing when a woman in a Caps jersey is cheering that same goal. Hilarious.
I have no other qualms with the Caps fan holding up the Sabres kid to celebrate…the goal was pretty awesome.

I think he’s actually capitalizing on his months of diabolical planning where He’s plotted to smash the entire Sabres roster with a state of the art giant invisible boulder.
He would have gotten away it too if it weren’t for that meddling kid, blocking him with his own giant invisible boulder.

That’s why Ted Leonsis has taken steps to prevent his arena from being filled with transplanted Sabres fans.
You think it’s a coincedence that both Sabres/Caps games in Washington are scheduled right next to Thanksgiving and Christmas? He did it last year too.

y’all are more paranoid than Caps fans, and they’re a pretty paranoid bunch.
Actually, last year, Buffalo was scheduled for Dec. 27, and April 3. That’s news to me that April 3 is anywhere close to Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Well I specifically meant that one game near Christmas. Should have been more clear.

It was Passover, which definitely made it more difficult for Jewish Sabre fans to attend the game. F*****g Leonsis.

The Caps fans are cheering because we clinched the SE by going to OT.

Buffalo's interesting to me...
Last year it looked for a while like they could maybe string together some wins and take the 8 seed. I think they made some good moves in the off-season. They weren’t the most noteworthy moves by any means but I think the players they got fit their mold pretty well.
Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek are incredible to watch on the offensive end . Same with Ryan Miller in net but at some point the people around him need to step up and make life a little easier for him. I feel like Miller’s constantly “standing on his head” for the team.

Back to the topic at hand....
This team rides or dies with Miller. And it’s not even close.
To me, it’s contradictory to say the X-Factor is Myers right after saying “And, as always, a healthy Ryan Miller is key.”
As usual, it’s another season of “ifs” for Buffalo.
by Afino on Sep 17, 2009 8:18 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep, although I would say the 1b to Miller is the underperforming of the forwards. Once again Darcy does NOTHING in the offseason so everyone is hoping that the core actually performs this year.
I think Pommer will have a good season and so will Vanek but major question marks remain on guys like Hecht and Stafford. Also, since we have a log jam at forward, when will the young guys be able to come up and play (even if they are better, which there are some indications they are based on the season they had in Portland)?
The population of Pominville keeps rising!
by Blackcapricorn on Sep 17, 2009 8:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well a positive about the logjam is the issue of motivation.
With so many NHL-calibre forwards, the players should know that if they don’t perform, they will be benched, demoted, or let go. To me, keeping essentially five lines worth of players happy and motivated will do wonders whether they’re ready or not.
Not to mention we both know injuries will hit….

The bell tolls for thee Timmy.
2 years ago I believed in the core that’s there now. Cheaper, younger, faster than the ECF teams. The last two years have been majorly disappointing and I can only hope that the promise shown by investing in guys like Roy comes through this year.
I have no idea if they have another 9th place finish if Darcy and Lindy are done. I really thought there would be some changes after this season but both seem to want to go down swinging with what they have. So be it.

Like it or not, Roy’s still on a bargain basement contract for the point production he’s given Buffalo.
I’ve always been of the thought that if one goes, so does the other. My guess is that Ruff resigns at the end of the season, and Regier gets fired shortly after.

I bet that’s how the front office situation plays out (assuming no playoffs). How much can Lindy scream at the kids and bench Vanek before he just gives up?
I really want to see what the Portland kids can do, as little as the team does in free agency, there IS reason to hope on the farm.

Is that what’s going on? I haven’t paid much attention to them this summer, so I just assumed the lack of moves was a budget thing.
I know a full season of Miller health changes things, but I suspect they’d need more than that to go deep.

It’s a little of both.
They feel that what they have is enough to be a playoff team. And yes, if everyone is healthy (Connolly, we’re looking at you) and no one grossly underachieves (hello Hecht and Pominville), they are. That’s how they feel.
But also, Darcy Regier has toed the line of “well, everyone’s up against either the NHL’s cap or their own cap, so there just isn’t a trade market out there” all summer long.

#1. Lindy’s contract is up this year.
#2. Only bad luck prevented this team from playing in the playoffs last year. By the end of the year, it was clear Buffalo (and FLO) were better than the Rags and the Habs. And this year that is true again. The question for me is whether this team can crack the top 6.

What Buffalo needs is Henrik Tallinder to revert to his 2005-07 form, when he played the tough minutes that allowed Brian Campbell made the highlight reel.
I can’t imagine how a rookie d-man who will be broken in on the 3rd pairing will be their X-Factor. No big, hulking D have had much of an impact as a teenager, and there’s no reason to suggest Myers will be different. It’ll be Tallinder, Lydman, Sekera, and Rivet that carry the bulk of the duties. Looking at Buffalo’s D, barring a trade to make room, I don’t even see much of a spot for Myers in a limited role. I guess he has to surpass Butler to get a regular gig, which is doable.
Even when Tim Connolly goes down for 4 months on about October 23, I think they’ll be okay at forward. I do wonder if this team fails, though, if they will go all Minnesota in terms of house cleaning.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Sekera is much bigger of an X-factor than Myers is, no doubt.
With Spacek gone, they have next to nothing in terms of point man production from the defensemen. Buffalo typically employs four forwards on the PP anyways, but someone has to be back there, and Sekera is that guy.

Someone on the blueline needs to be a big factor for them to succeed, that’s for sure.

Fully agreed.
As Buff66 says below, Tallinder is toast. It’s really up to Sekera, Butler, and yes, Myers.
by Afino on Sep 17, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tallinder is toast and the Sabres would’ve traded him for a pick or a bag of pucks if they could’ve fetched that for him this offseason.
While I wish he could regain that form as well, he has suffered some painful arm injuries as a result of taking heavy contact in the boards in the last couple of years. You can see his level of aggressiveness has dropped off.
I disagree with your housecleaning angle. All of the Sabres stars are hitting their prime. This should be a run whereby the next 3-4 years put them into Cup contention.

Every year I wonder, “How long will Ruff and Regier keep their jobs?” I think their longevity is amazing, but then I thought the same about Risebrough and Lemaire too.
by BJLB on Sep 17, 2009 3:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Lalime, and how the Sabres play around him is the x-factor. Miller isn’t built for the grind like some other goalies in the league are (see: Kiprusoff, Brodeur). With the condensed schedule and the Olympics it’s a fact Lalime is going to be seeing more starts. I didn’t actually get to watch the 2nd Sabres/Leafs game but Lalime letting through 7 definitely concerned me.
Did any of you watch Butler last year? At times he was the best defensemen on the ice for the Sabres and judging by some of the minutes he got I think Ruff would agree. The reason he did so well stepping in is because he’s a smart and mature player and I definitely only see him taking another step forward this season.
Our depth is a lot better than last year and I think we will handle the inevitable injuries much better.
My prediction: 6th place
