2009-10 NHL Season Preview: Los Angeles Kings
Who's in: Robert Scuderi, Ryan Smyth
Who's out: Derek Armstrong, Brian Boyle, Kyle Calder, Dan Cloutier, Denis Gauthier, Tom Preissing, Kyle Quincey
Outlook: GM Dean Lombardi aimed to accelerate his rebuilding plan in the summer, and while his search for a first-line winger in free agency went unfulfilled, he managed to land Ryan (Captain Canada) Smyth from the Avs for promising youngster Kyle Quincey and spare part Tom Preissing. Also on the way in is useful stay-at-home defenceman Rob Scuderi, who signed a generous contract as a free agent after providing a stabilizing influence on the Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
The addition of Smyth should help kick start the Kings offence somewhat, as will a healthy Justin Williams, but the biggest room for improvement in the goal-scoring department likely comes from some of the youngsters — Anze Kopitar, Alex Frolov, Dustin Brown and Teddy Purcell — who all underwhelmed in key minutes last season.
Terry Murray will also be looking for a step forward from his blueliners, and Drew Doughty is tasked with replacing many of the power play quarterbacking minutes lost in the Smyth deal. His point totals should rise considerably as a sophomore, however, and the back end as a whole will benefit from a full season with Jack Johnson in the fold.
Perhaps the biggest question mark, however, comes in goal, where backup Erik Ersberg struggled last season and Jonathan Quick proved surprisingly strong despite spending much of the 2007-08 campaign in the ECHL. Quick will likely be charged with picking up the bulk of the starts, and any step back from him would go a long way to derailing Los Angeles' likely slim playoff hopes.
If the goals start to come, however, they could surprise.

Agree. The Kings could be decent this season… It all depends on Quick in net though.

I find it surprising that LA sent Moller down so early.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.

I was pretty shocked at that myself

Moller needs a full year in the AHL. The Kings are pretty set at their first 3 lines, so a year spent on the 4th line would do him no good. The plus side is that if there are some injuries, the Kings actually have some depth with young players to call up from the AHL.

You think acquiring Ryan Smyth is what pushed Moller down? From what I saw last season, he didn’t look out of place.

Teddy Purcell beat out Moller at camp (and is older, bigger). Moller needs to go down to Manchester and produce some numbers. Should be back midseason.

Exactly. I have no problem with Moller being a player that is called up because of injury or Purcell not being able to pull it off.

Quincey
James – I think you overestimate him. Waiver pickup. No track record of this kind of PP performance. 5th D at even-strength. Kings sold high…

Well, the Red Wings certainly weren’t happy they lost him on waivers. They thought they had something there.
I don’t think he’ll be a huge point producer, but he’s a big guy, 24 years old and plays a hard-nosed game. I’d probably make him a No. 4 at this point, although we’ll see how he comes back from back surgery.

The Wings kept Ericsson in the minors even when he was NHL ready. Quincey must’ve been along the same lines.

They traded Brian Boyle for a 3rd rounder? Jeez.

Boyle was a complete bust for the Kings. Considering they passed up players like Corey Perry to get him… I’d take a 3rd rounder for him. In typical Kings fashion… he’ll probably light NYC on fire and become a consistent 30 goal scorer.
