Goaltender Cam Ward has agreed to a six-year, $37.8 million extension with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes will make it official at a news conference in Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon.

With a Cup and Conn Smythe already on his resume and stats that have improved each year in all categories, Carolina has locked up their young star goalie at $6.3 mil per.  Ward's entering the final season of a three-year, $8 mil deal and is a contender for the third-goalie spot on Team Canada.

The $6.3 mil cap hit puts Ward second on the list for next year behind Henrik Lundqvist, whose AAV is $6.875.  Rounding out the $6 mil+ club are Ryan Miller at $6.25 mil, and Backstrom/Giguere at $6 mil, followed by Kiprusoff at $5.83.

Add Ryan Miller

He would be a member of the $6 million club. He is making $6.25 million per season.

Not to mention that Luongo still has a $6,75 million cap hit – the cheaper long term deal doesn’t start until next season.

Wow, is this dumb or what? The cost of goaltending is so cheap right now, I can’t imagine paying this far above replacement for Cam Ward. Just crazy stuff. Not as dumb as Edmonton shelling out for Khabibulin, but pretty close.

Yes, because paying a steady goaltender that much money when he has proven to be both a regular season workhorse and a playoff performer is dumb.

This is a market contract. Nothing to see here.

By the way, only him and Giguere are the only members of the $6 mil+ group to have a Cup.

Well, Khabibulin WAS just in the $6m club until 4 seasons of not winning a Cup in Chicago took hold.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

One big difference: Age.

Khabby was 31 when he won the Cup. Ward was 22.

……I guess missed your point. Disregard, I need another coffee.

Unless you’re one of the top five or so goalies in the League, you’re not worth $6M in terms of what you do for your team, simply because any of the next ten or fifteen guys could do basically the same thing in any given year, accounting for injuries etc. The market is broken.

Luongo should be added to the list with an asterisk, since he is earning over $6.7 million for the next 9 years, but only has a cap hit of $5.3 million because he is old enough to use the Detroit salary cap dodge, with low salaries in years he is going to be retired.

Locking up Cam Ward is a great move. He is the type of goalie that I tell my son to watch; solid in positioning, confident handling the puck, and good anticipation. I also like that he’s not flashy.

Occam's Razor keeps the cutting clean.
