Rick DiPietro: Should the Islanders (and fans) still be concerned about his health?

Long-term, big-time contracts will put (and keep) any player in the spotlight.  For good or bad, this no doubt subjects a player to endless criticism.  Have a good game, and you're worth every penny.  Battle through a slump, and you're overpaid.

But when that player is repeatedly injured and out of the lineup for months at a time, there is suddenly a new label you can throw into the mix.  All the talk of what was accomplished in the past or may be accomplished in the future transcends into one mantra: I guess we're stuck with him either way.

For Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro, now three seasons into his 15-year, $67.5 million deal, it's hard to really say where fans stand.  After two knee surgeries, two hip surgeries and a concussion or two thrown into the mix, the Islanders faithful have every right to be skeptical.

DP returned to action earlier this month against the Stars, a 4-3 loss for the Islanders but no doubt a moral victory of sorts for their goaltender.  Although he didn't start again until a week later against the Sabres, he did return to claim his first win since December 2008.  Two nights later against division rival New Jersey, his first shutout since February 2008.  Was the number one pick in the 2000 draft...back?  If fantasy hockey is any indicator, fans definitely acted like he was.  Ownership on Yahoo! had DP jump from 2% to the upper-20 percentile practically over night.  As of right now he's currently owned by 38% of teams (hungry for a goaltender who actually starts, I myself picked him up - thanks again Pascal Leclaire).  The more loyal New York fans, however, still have their reservations.

Dominik, editor over at Lighthouse Hockey, had this to say in a recent e-mail exchange:

Fans have two underlying concerns. First: Can he regain his peak form after a year on the shelf with all that rehab? (He was rightly in the All-Star Game in 2007-08, having carried that Islanders team to a playoff position by January 2008. Before his hip injury in the skills competition, the feeling was he "had arrived.")

The second concern -- made moot if he can't answer the first -- is: Will he have the long-term durability to carry the load as a number one again? We've seen with many goalies that the butterfly style has not been kind to hips and knees over the long haul, and DiPietro has had two hip surgeries and knee surgeries before age 28. So prudence would dictate not just having a quality backup, but also using that backup so that DP doesn't play as often as he once did. I don't think fans are expecting him to play until Dwayne Roloson's age, but there is measured hope for the near term.

Four games may not be the best gauge as to whether or not DiPietro is back in tip-top shape, but it's already just one game short of his entire 2008-09 season.  As Dominik later added, keeping a goaltender like Dwayne Roloson in town is the safe bet to making sure the team is prepared to handle another injury, should that misfortune continue to plague DP.  Even though the future of Marty Biron remains in question, with many suggesting a trade of sorts by the deadline, the Islanders did spend two picks on goaltenders this past summer up in Montreal.

Whether or not DiPietro is "back" still remains in question.  The Islanders and fans may continue to refrain from such bold statements, especially if a superstitious fan doesn't want to test the hockey gods by even uttering the word (after all, he's yet to injure his back).

If anything, a full, healthy season regardless of wins and losses would at least help squash some skepticism.  And perhaps carrying the team to a successful playoff berth, its first since 06/07, would more or less seal the deal.

well to be fair for some guys it's not a bad call

Like Ovechkin or even Kovalchuck when his time comes. The curiosity about the Dipietro signing was his health to a degree and it was also because it was for 15 years. I mean not even Ovechkin (who I think is the best player in the game) got 15 years. Maybe the Caps should start working out an extension …

As for the contract itself, the salary number of 4.5 mil per year certainly isn’t bad if he played 55-65 games a season and was an above-average tender. Heck if that was true the Isles would be getting better than market terms for his services.

Yeah

this was a high risk high reward move.

Given the injuries already sustained and this overall sense that the Islanders “don’t want to push it,” I need to be convinced that Rick DiPietro will play another season of 50+ games at some point in his career. He’s done 60+ in years prior, but there seems to be this “Caution: Handle with Care” label across his sweater, and rightfully so.

Isnt there something about insurance in these contracts that only covers 6 years or something?

by TylerA7707 on Jan 26, 2010 10:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s a good question. I’m not entirely sure.

I know that in the wake of all the Tiger Woods crap I read a bunch of stuff regarding agencies taking out insurance on their spokesperson so that any damage to that person’s reputation could in turn be considered a damage to the company’s reputation and they could be compensated for it. You’d think something similar could exist for athletes and their teams regarding injuries too, huh? Especially on these big contracts.

I’m not an expert by any means when it comes to that kind of stuff though. Maybe someone else can chime in on the matter.

If I remember correctly from the Ovechkin deal, it was eight years that the contracts are insured (through the NHL’s insurance?), and any further has to be purchased separately.

That is true in regard to the present...

In another 5-7 years, that kind of money might be the going rate for an average backup goalie, not even a starter. Time will tell… but if we have learned anything, its that salaries keep going up.

also

Ovechkin got the max contract didn’t he? The point of Dipietro’s deal was to get a discount over the long haul, so the two aren’t comparable.

by AronV on Jan 26, 2010 12:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Theyre still kinda comparable… the idea is that if they gave Ovie a shorter deal, when he was up for his next deal the max would be even higher than that.

Actually

This one isn’t that good of an example. While DiPietro is on the shelf he’s on LTIR and the Isles get cap relief.

Now, if he stinks the rest of the way because of the surgeries then it’s a better example.

This is true. But if he winds up competent and perhaps average instead of outstanding, as much of a shame as that would be, I dont think the Isles lose. Its only a matter of time before a 4.5M salary is going to be far below anything anyone would give to an above average vetran goalie.

the Islanders did spend two picks on goaltenders this past summer up in Montreal.

Lets not forget having a kid like Kevin Poulin in the system. The Isles have pretty significant depth as far as goaltending prospects go.

Fantasy

Frank mentioned DiPietro’s fantasy value, and one thing you can count on is that he will get starts for the rest of the year. While Roloson has been fantastic, the Isles are committed to working DiPietro in — really, it’s a franchise imperative to test what they have. So he’ll very likely play more than the average backup.

The contract was a fascinating gamble. I always saw it as three bets: 1) that salaries would continue to rise (mostly they did, but this year there are very good veteran goalies making under $3 million); 2) that DiPietro would reach the form of goalies who draw $4.5-plus (he did, before the injuries); 3) that he’d be healthy enough and in good form for long enough to make it worth it. Naturally, the injuries began within two years.

It’s not a bet I would have made at that position — they’ve already lost 1.5 years to injury — but if he gets #1 form back for any length of time, it will be fun to figure (heh, 10 years from now) what they ultimately paid per good season.

The only issue I had with the DiPi deal was it was given to a goaltender. Goaltenders have more often than skaters either gotten hurt and never been the same or just completely fell off the earth (Jim Carey? Byron Dafoe?)

I bet if Datsyuk was handed a 15-year deal four years ago, it would have been the best contract in the history of the league.
