Anyone Want a $7 Million Backup?
ESPN's Pierre Lebrun broke news this morning of Jonas Hiller's new contract, with the actual numbers just being leaked: (h/t to Kukla)
The Anaheim Ducks have agreed to a four-year contract extension with Jonas Hiller, a source told ESPN.com Saturday, taking a top-flight goalie off next summer's free-agent market.
The deal is worth $18 million, the source said. That total is well above the $1.3 million Hiller is earning in the final year of his contract.
The 27-year-old Hiller, who will start in goal for Switzerland next month at the Vancouver Olympics, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
For the record, Jean-Sebastien Giguere has one year left on a deal that will pay him $7 million (cap hit $6 million). In trade terms, though, you can probably have him for a pack of old Pro Set hockey cards.
That leaves Marty Turco and Evgeni Nabokov as the big UFA goalies, with the second tier of starters being Jose Theodore, Dan Ellis, Ray Emery, and Pekke Rinne. M. Brodeur is also available, but that's Mike, not Martin.

I wish someone would pay me $7 million to be a backup. Of course I would never get to that kind of salary if we’re basing it off my play. They’d probably insist I pay them to be a backup, but regardless at least in Giggy’s case he’s still making money. Doesn’t make him all that appealing on the open market, but I’m sure that doesn’t matter at all to him. He can hit as a free agent at the end of his contract and still get a decent deal…somewhere.

Maybe I'm being unfair.
Or perhaps I’m blinded by my own bias. But, I’ve just never gotten Giggy. To me his success was more a product of oversized equipment than that of anyone else. Just look how wide he is in the above picture.

Lucky for Anaheim no one ever thought to measure his pads.

Angles and net coverage. He’s the epitome of a blocking, butterfly goaltender.

given the past couple of seasons, I’d stick Turco down in that second tier.

The Ducks would gladly give Burke Jiggy for a bag of peanuts.
