Bob Gainey Steps Down As Habs GM

"I've done my best and now it's time for me to pass the torch," Gainey said on Monday. "I believe that the general manager position requires a long-term vision and a long-term commitment. At this point, I'm not prepared to make a commitment of four or five or six more years in this position."

This timing seems awfully strange to me, and perhaps the idea is to let the Olympic break act as a mid-season transition. Since Gainey is staying on in an advisory role, he probably worked in tandem with Pierre Gauthier for at least the past few months while they worked up to this public announcement. At least, that's what common sense tells me, but we all know that common sense doesn't necessarily apply in pro sports.

If that's what is happening behind the scenes, then I don't quite understand why the announcement is made public now as opposed to after the season ends. Perhaps they want Gauthier to step forward and take the team's identity during the trade deadline, or maybe we can take his words at face value and Gainey just figured it was time for personal reasons.

Whatever the case, Gainey's legacy as a GM isn't particularly strong. TSN has a poll up regarding Gainey's best move, and you get to pick from Alex Kovalev, Cristobal Huet/Radek Bonk, Josh Gorges, Mike Cammalleri, Carey Price, or hiring Guy Carbonneau. If that's the best you have to pick from over 6+ years, it's not exactly gangbusters.

Stepping down a scant few weeks before the trade deadline?

Ahh well, it’s not as if this is any big loss to the Canadiens.

Damage is done, this is about 10 months too late

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

If you think he did a bad job, take a peek at their record before he took over as GM. Those teams were truly awful. Abysmal really.

Trying to defend Gainey’s work today is like trying to push the Great Wall barehanded.

The collective mind of Montreal fans would like you to believe Gainey was an atrocious GM and the worst thing to happen to this team in forever…

People will truly miss him when they name Patrick Roy as GM during the summer, and we get started on another 10 years of absolute mediocrity.

Ack!

Roy as GM would make Rejean Houle look like Bowman. :)

Fingers crossed!

The Habs were a disaster in 2003 when Bob took over. They didn’t have a waiting list for season tickets, fans were fickle to the point of being dispassionate, and the team couldn’t attract a single quality free agent. I mean, before Gainey, the best they could do was get a 37 year old Randy Mackay or Doug Gilmour to finish their career in town. Now they can get some of the top talent on the free market to sign on the dotted line, like Mike Cammalleri did.

Players will play here now. Not all of them, but some good ones will take up the challenge. The Habs are one of the biggest money makers in the league, and the season ticket waiting list is ridiculous. Gainey was a huge reason for these things.

And say what you will about the players TSN mentioned… Gainey acquired their leading scorer for 4 straight years for practically nothing, Huet led the league in save percentage one year, Gorges is a quality cap friendly top 4 D, Cammalleri is a 35-40 goal scorer and Carey Price is still the most decorated goaltender 22 years or younger in the world. Guy Carbonneau is an odd one to put on there, but they did finish 1st in the East one year under him.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Gainey’s been through the ringer the past few years, both personally and professionally. The past 18 months he’s made some bizarre moves that really seem to show he was unraveling.

I think it’s a good call for him to step down, and the timing isn’t so bizarre considering his replacement can take the Olympic break to wrap his head around everything going into the trade deadline.

If I were Gainey I’d take a month long vacation somewhere tropical, quiet, and with full bar.
