Trade Deadline: Morning Recap
First, a friendly reminder that From The Rink will be doing hourly recaps and analysis of trade activity starting, well, with this post at the 11:00 AM EST hour. Don't forget that you can stay up to date on rumors by going to SB Nation's trade deadline hub. As you can see, not too much has happened so far, though the hockey Twitterverse is certainly talking names like Ray Whitney, Aaron Ward, Dan Hamhuis, and Paul Kariya (who apparently has NOT been asked to waive his no-trade clause).
Major Trades
Phoenix Coyotes acquire Derek Morris for the Boston Bruins' 2011 4th round pick.
Analysis: This is a good move for both teams. Morris played well in his last few seasons in the Phoenix; now he's going back there with a chance to do more than just anchor a rebuilding defense. With Ed Jovanovski, Keith Yandle, and Zybynek Michalek, the Coyotes will have a formidable blueline going into the playoffs. Morris' cap hit is now off Boston's books so they can address their scoring situation, and Morris is UFA after this year. Also, Phoenix doesn't give up too much, so everyone's happy.
Toronto Maple Leafs send Martin Skoula to the New Jersey Devils for a 5th round pick (NJD return updated 11:20 AM).
Analysis: Skoula was a throw-in from yesterday's Alexei Ponikarovsky trade, and he moves on to Jersey where he's reunited with Jacques Lemaire after their time together in Minnesota. Nothing more than a depth move, though you can be the fact that Skoula understands what Lemaire wants certainly helps.
Since there weren't too many moves this morning coming up to the publishing time of this recap, here's a quick refresher on yesterday's major moves:
Florida Panthers send Jordan Leopold to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2nd round pick.New York Islanders send Andy Sutton to the Ottawa Senators for a 2nd round pick.
Anaheim Ducks send Nick Boynton to the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations.
Toronto Maple Leafs send Alexei Ponikarovsky for to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Martin Skoula and Luca Caputi.
Chris Chelios signs with the Thrashers organization, passes through waivers and is sent to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.
